Kayak For A Cause

July 29, 2011: Washington, DC: Living waterside certainly has its perks, and one of them is the chance to participate in aquatic adventures like the one that gets underway tomorrow morning in Connecticut. Tomorrow a literal group of nomads comes together on the water to lend a hand to terrific local charities. If you're in the Norwalk area Saturday, head to Shady Beach to applaud the hundreds of paddlers who will be completing their crossing of Long Island Sound as part of a fundraiser called Kayak For A Cause. For the last two years, I've traveled up to Connecticut to participate, and I found Kayak For A Cause IX and X to be quite the expeditions.... I'm sorry to miss out this year on KFAC XI!

Paddlers start tomorrow's adventure at Crab Meadow Beach on Long Island. In committing to the event, they've each raised lots of money for four deserving charities: event proceeds go to Canine Companions for Independence; Reach Out and Row , a community outreach program of The Norwalk River Rowing Association; Save The Sound, a program of the Connecticut Fund for the Environment; and The V Foundation for Cancer Research.

In teams called pods, the group paddles 13 miles across the Sound. They wear lots of sunblock and drink lots of Gatorade. It's pretty neat to experience this place from the middle of this body of water. New York City is out of sight at one end of the Sound to the left and Block Island is out of sight at the other to the right. Home to Connecticut is straight ahead.

Paddlers complete the trek across the Sound at the beach in Norwalk, with family and friends cheering them on.

Tomorrow's festivities at Shady Beach run from noon to 7p. Donate to some wonderful hometown causes and stay for the food, the music and the party!
